More turtle trouble in Cabo

Just one week after 19 baby hatchlings were crushed by a bulldozer on a Cabo beach, more turtles suffered a near death experience this weekend.
And once again, the nest was destroyed by hotel activity. This week outside the Sheraton Hotel.
Temporary seats were built in the sand for a moonlight event for guests. The turtle nests were completely destroyed by this construction. And worse still, the tarpaulins used to cover the “sand seats” almost suffocated the tiny turtles.
Fortunately, two local men were quick to react. And gathered up the baby hatchlings in their t-shirts. The turtles were badly dehydrated but luckily escaped death.
Turtles conservation is a really big deal in Cabo. Any breach of responsibility is met with serious consequences. Last week’s debacle with the bulldozer smoothing the sands and crushing the nest has resulted in a full enquiry. During which time the Blue Flag status for the area of Medano beach outside Riu Hotel has been temporarily suspended.
Not good for turtles. Not good for business. And not good for Cabo’s reputation.
