New laws in Cabo and across BCS

New regulations come into force today banning the use of plastic straws, bags and polystyrene containers throughout BCS.

This is a really big deal for the environment. And a big step in the right direction. Businesses, shops, bars, hotels and restaurants are all expected to comply.  Supposedly supermarkets in Los Cabos already stopped selling plastic bag on August 01, but we still spotted a few when we were out shopping last night. Obviously, it’s all going to take a bit of time.

But beware - non-compliance could result in fines of up to 40 000 pesos. These will be higher for bigger businesses than street vendors or small shops.

What is not so clear right now is:

  1. IF individual citizens or tourists will be penalized and
  2. HOW exactly it will all work.

We’re trying to find out the details and will keep you posted.

Lots of other stuff is also about to start. La Paz is one step ahead and is the first city to roll out a new policy on waste management and composting. It’s due to come into effect today. Cabo and other parts of BCS are expected to follow within the next 90 days.

Anyway, even if does take a while to get sorted out, given the wonderful natural environment and incredible wildlife of the Baja, giving up straws and plastic bags seem like a pretty small price to pay.

Do your bit and switch to REUSABLES today.
