Cabo catch up – music, films, eating, drinking, fishing, and sport

Cabo Catch Up

We’re moving towards high season here in Cabo. Things are getting busy. And there’s been lot’s going on. Here’s a quick update on major events in Oct and Nov.

As always, October begins the Cabo’s official sportfishing tournaments – Billfish, Bisbee and the Cabo Tuna Jackpot.

This year saw some phenomenal prize money for phenomenal fish… with a 510-pound black marlin worth a staggering $3,004,900. And a 272 pounder, worth a record $392,600, taking the 20th Cabo Tuna Jackpot.

The annual October birthday bash for the legendary Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar, played to a packed house. Fans came from far and wide and Cabo Wabo was sold out for the 3-night event.

Kicking off the many gastronomic events in these months was the first ever San Jose del Cabo Restaurant Week. Local restaurants offered taster menus – for only $600 pesos - to tempt the palates of locals and tourists alike.

Los Cabos eating, drinking and music events all moved up a notch in early November with three new festivals – Life Luxe Jazz, 1st Torneo Internacional de Paella, and the Cabo Cocktail Fest.

Then came the Los Cabos International Film Festival. With a regular November slot, the festival showcases Mexican, US and Canadian cinema to the rest of the world. Now in its 7th year, it attracted over 12 000 visitors. Among this year’s award winners were Spike Lee and Adam Driver.

Sabor al Cabo 2018 Rural took place this year on the rustic, Huerta Orgánica Los Tamarindos. The 20 participating restaurants prepared recipes cooked in a traditional manner and with local ingredients.

Los Cabos Grand Velas continued the November culinary theme with “The Grand Chef Star”. Where guests were free to mingle with two Michelin-Star chefs over 3 gourmet evenings.

As for sport, on November 04, Cabo‘s Ironman 70.3 attracted 1200 competitors from around the world, and over 7000 visitors. And the 25th Baja Ha-Ha cruiser rally sailed in to Cabo on the 9th Nov. (And this very weekend, we have Extreme sailing Series on 29-30 Nov).

Turtles - good news. One of Cabo’s olive ridley turtles successfully fitted with a satellite tracker just last week. Named “Patricia” – the turtle will be tracked as part of a conservation project that started in 2009.

Turtles -bad news. 18 baby were hatchlings crushed by a bulldozer on a  Cabo beach (see full blog).

Whales – can’t forget about them. Already being spotted in the waters around Cabo  (see Whale time in Cabo). The official whale watching season begins on Dec 15, 2018 (and runs through to April 30, 2019). Humpback, blue and fin whales are all expected in pretty good numbers this season. If you haven’t yet witnessed this amazing event. You must. It’s the perfect excuse to make a trip to Cabo.

OK, that’s just a round up of some recent Cabo events. The biggest things to be excited about this weekend are the Extreme Sailing Series, and of course, the Sabor a Cabo event tonight.  A huge gastronomic event. And with special guest Miguel Bose - this year’s after party promises to be superb!
